Planning Your Family Portrait Session
Where to Start…
When creating an artwork, it is important to look at the outfits we are wearing. Think about what might work in displayed in your home.
We want the final outcome to be harmonious.
Midtones. This is easy and works so well. Maybe choose colours somewhere in-between cream and charcoal. Choose to keep colours on the lighter side or together on the darker side.Denim is beautiful for this look - but not everybody wearing jeans, so it’s not too matching, but maybe mum wearing a denim dress, one person denim jeans and if you have enough people maybe one other wearing a denim jacket.
Dark images look great with a darker background. But this doesn’t necessarily mean black. Charcoal or navy is great for this.
Also, pick a colour palette that you like. This could be greens and blues. Or maybe reds, yellows and orange. You could pick the statement dress, and then mix the other colours around it. Low contrast pattern for one of the people can work for this.
Brown, black, denims, white, brown is a great neutral combination. Bringing many different options along to the session can be a great option too. (Different belts, shoes etc.)
What to Wear
Gone are the days where everyone wears white shirts and denim. As you are choosing what to wear, think about the outcome.
For a lighter photograph, I recommend wearing lighter clothes and I will photograph against a lighter background. Soft creams, taupe, tan, linen and grey are my preference for this type of look.
What not to do - there are two main things.
No Graphics. No Words. This Christmas photo of our family is a perfect example of what not to do. It’s distracting, not professional and ends up looking like a phone photo - not an artwork.
No graphics. Pictures of The Wiggles, an artwork of an animal, or any graphic in the middle of your t-shirt is distracting and unharmonious.
No words. Branding such as Billabong, Seed, Country Road anywhere displayed on the the clothing is distracting.
We want your eyes to go to all the beautiful smiling faces - not reading the clothing.
And lastly… Check your shoes!
Makes sure everyone has footwear to match the style that you are wearing. You don’t want to be all dressed up with one kid in a pair of joggers.
And likewise, you don’t want everyone to be wearing tan sandals and boat shoes, BUT there’s one person showing up in glaringly white nikes. Make sure the footwear is harmonious to the outfits.

Meet Rachel Ware
I love to take the time to get to know your family, and a surprise benefit I’ve stumbled upon whilst photographing kids, is that photographs can help empower kids. They can see themselves differently, giving them confidence. As a mum of 3 kids myself, I love sharing this joy around.
My goal as a photographer is to celebrate children at every age, to unveil the energy of a child in my images and to help families decorate their homes with personal artwork. Artwork that matters.
Recently one of my past clients from 15 years ago shared with me, they planned to print their own album, but they could never agree on the images, the layout or even the album company. So the images were never printed.
Which is why I now take such pride in helping my clients plan where their photographs will be displayed in their homes.
My Grandfather has been my creative inspiration. He spent years restoring old photographs and photographing his family because, “family is so important”, he would say. He printed ALL the images.
It becomes an easy and rewarding process to not only get photos printed, but to get artwork that will last for generations.
